The deal that Pakistan brokered between the United States and Iran now has an official name — and it carries Pakistan’s capital city in its title.
The United States released the official Iran Deal Text of the memorandum of understanding on Wednesday. A senior US administration official read out the 14-point document, officially titled: “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
That name alone is historic. When future historians study how the 2026 Iran war ended, they will reference the Islamabad MoU. Pakistan’s name is permanently attached to this agreement.
What the Iran deal text Actually Says
The document declares “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts” — explicitly including Lebanon.
Key provisions from the 14 points:
- A 60-day period — extendable if both sides agree — to negotiate a final deal
- The US will begin removing its naval blockade upon signing and fully end the blockade within 30 days if a final deal is reached
- Iran will use its “best efforts” to ensure safe passage of commercial vessels
- Those vessels will not be charged for 60 days
- Iran can begin selling oil immediately after signing
The formal signing is expected Friday at a resort in Switzerland, with both sides represented.
Trump’s G7 Comments: “I Didn’t Want Economic Catastrophe”

At the G7 summit, Trump explained why he pursued the deal even though Iran retained some of its ballistic missile capability. His words were unusually direct: “So, the one thing I didn’t want to see is I didn’t want to see economic catastrophe. If you kept this going, that could have happened.”
He compared walking away from the deal to becoming “the late, great Herbert Hoover” — invoking the US president whose economic decisions deepened the Great Depression. Even for Trump, that is a rare historical reference.
NPR’s G7 coverage noted the Iran deal dominated the summit agenda, with G7 leaders largely praising the agreement while questions about Iran’s nuclear program remain unresolved in the second stage of negotiations.
Why “Islamabad” in the Title Matters for Pakistan
The deal was negotiated through Pakistan. Named after Pakistan’s capital. And Pakistan’s PM announced it to the world before either the US or Iran issued their own confirmations.

For ordinary Pakistanis, the effects are already visible. Petrol prices have been cut five consecutive weeks. The PSX jumped 4,400 points when the deal was announced. Gold has fallen sharply. If Friday’s signing holds, more relief follows.
